Welcome to my website!

There’s a reason why fish-out-of-water stories grab us. When characters are uprooted from what they know—when they are bewildered, baffled, and alone—they are either going to sink…or shine on. We really wonder which one. And how. We like to see the ways humans make sense of their worlds.

Whether it’s my own story as a wandering, global child; the story of how people came face-to-face with a rhinoceros; or stories of how humans began to puzzle out the bits that were left of an ancient Earth, I write a lot of fish-out-of-water stories.

Jump in with me. The water’s fine. We have lives and mysteries to explore.

Two new books about the wide, wide world ... ... what it’s like to learn about it and what it’s like to travel across its borders.
